Without knowing, we expose ourselves to harmful, dangerous toxins each day. But you do not have to flip your life upside down to avoid these health hazards. The tips below give simple and effective ways you can adopt a healthier, greener lifestyle.
Open Your Windows
Say farewell to stale air. Opening your doors for at least five minutes each day will allow fresh air to circulate around your house. This is a much better alternative to air fresheners or incense, which usually contain toxic ingredients and do little to actually purify your air.
Remove Outside Shoes
When you come inside, put on some cozy slippers — your home and feet with thank you. Shoes can often track pesticide residue, bacteria, and other toxic resides from outside.
Do Not Microwave Plastic
Although it can be convenient, even plastic labeled as “microwave safe” can leach toxic, hormone-disrupting chemicals into your food. The best alternative is to transfer any food to glass or lead-free ceramic dishware before microwaving.
Skip Paper Receipts
Receipts are typically printed on thermal paper, which produces an image when a layer of powder on the paper reacts with heat. This powder contains the hormone disrupting chemical, BPA. Even worse, this powder can easily rub off onto your fingers and is quickly absorbed through the bloodstream. If you do acquire a receipt, remember to wash your hands with soap and water as soon as possible.
Drink Filtered Tap Water
Skip bottled water since it is both a waste of money and pollutes our environment. It has minimal advantages over tap water, and often times, the plastic polyethylene terephthalate bottles can leach into the water, especially when heated.
Wash Your Hands Frequently
Our hands receive the most exposure to toxic chemicals, so it is especially important to wash your hands when you handle food. All you need is soap and water!
Call on Speakerphone and Turn Off WiFi
The World Health Organization labeled electromagnetic frequency radiation as a possible human carcinogen. There is a growing body of epidemiological literature examining the health impacts of electromagnetic frequency radiation exposure, including that from mobile phones, cell towers, radio/TV towers, WiFi, and other household electronics. Instead, limit your exposure in ways that do not interfere too much with your daily routine. Rely on corded landlines whenever possible at home or at work; turn your WiFi router off at night; put your mobile phone on airplane mode at night and when traveling in the car.
